Overview and highlights

Finding out the mystery of the Upper Mustang trek will surely lead you to a world in which you do not expect with all its wondrous experience. The main source of custom and tradition in the Upper Mustang is Buddhism. This is a place where religion has indeed made a great impact in the vicinity. The kingdom of the Buddhist is also called as the Mustang Lo. Furthermore, the Lo is used to be a part of the empire of the Tibetan. So this means that it also practices the Tibetan culture, tradition, and its language.

Going about to the Upper Mustang trek, you will see how the people have preserved the Tibetan culture together with its unspoiled environment. To deepen the thought about the upper Mustang, it lies in the shadow of the Dhaulagiri massif that somehow creates a very dry area that is surrounded by rocks. These rocks are made of different forms and even colors which you will find it very amazing. Although the land is typically barren, it still has this ambiance effect of making you appreciate the wonderful fields; houses are made up of whitewash. There will also be flags that you will see. This symbolizes their religious beliefs as well.

The goal of the upper Mustang trek

Following the trails of ancient caravan route in which the people of Tibetan means of livelihood was the trade of salt for grains to the lower lands. So this is like from the upper Mustang trek up downwards wherein you can see a view that has been walled during the medieval times. As you step into the Lo Manthang, you will see another world that you can’t expect seeing it differently. From then, you will see long walls of prayer wheels. Farming animals and other herds are their means of livelihood as well.

How to get to the upper mustang?

There is only one way for you to reach through the higher lands of the upper Mustang and that is by flying to Pokhara to Munkath Jomsom. You will also experience the deepest narrow valley which trails to the Kali Gandaki that is in between the mountains of Nilgiri and Dhaulagiri. Up towards the stream is the river bed to the Kagbeni. However, the Kagbeni area is said to be restricted so for sure your tour guide will not lead you to this particular area.

If you can book yourself for an upper Mustang trek, accommodation is your option to live with the locals. There are some locals who are kind enough to have you accommodated in their homes. However, this is only an option as there will guests houses provided.

Whereas, to other necessities, it would be best to ask your tour guide such as the migration that happens to be in season. During winter months, most of the people living in the upper Mustang go down to the lower lands. Keep in mind that if you happened to go for upper Mustang trekking during the winter days, it would be a bit of a hassle.
